Maverick Lyon Shooting Albany,OR Death-Saint Anselm College Lacrosse Player Shot by Police

A Saint Anselm College senior and standout lacrosse player, Maverick Lyon, 21, was shot by police in his hometown of Albany, Oregon, on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred as officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance.

According to police, officers encountered an armed individual with a knife at the scene. Two officers discharged their weapons, striking Maverick Lyon. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died

An affidavit reveals a complex and harrowing situation. Police were called by the Lyons’ father, who reported watching live security footage showing Maverick being held hostage at knifepoint by his older brother, John Dakota Lyon. The affidavit states the video depicted John with a knife while Maverick pleaded with him to put it down. A struggle ensued after Maverick also grabbed a knife, with the brothers wrestling over the weapons before John led Maverick from the kitchen.

The affidavit does not detail the moments leading to the police shooting, and the official press release does not specify the timeline between officers’ arrival and the shooting.

John Dakota Lyon has been charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree kidnapping and assault. The involved officers are on standard administrative leave.

Saint Anselm College confirmed awareness of the incident, stating, “We are in touch with the family and working to support the student and his family during this difficult time.” Lyon, an Oregon native, has scored 43 goals in his collegiate career.
