Ellen Thurston obituary: Hudson Honors the Life and Legacy of Ellen Thurston
It is with deep sadness that the Hudson community marks the passing of one of its most cherished luminaries and a foundational member of the Hudson Hall Board of Directors, Ellen Thurston. Her loss is felt profoundly across the city and within the many cultural institutions she helped shape.
Ellen’s relationship with Hudson Hall spanned more than three decades, during which her dedication, creativity, and leadership left an indelible mark on the historic building and the organization it houses. Her influence extended far beyond the walls of Hudson Hall, touching countless lives through her tireless commitment to the arts and community engagement.

As Carole Osterink eloquently wrote in her tribute, Ellen was “inventive, witty, generous, and kind,” embodying a spirit that was truly indefatigable. Fellow founding board member Sarah Lipsky recalled Ellen’s passionate stewardship of Winter Walk, a beloved event she guided for decades, ensuring it remained a unifying celebration of art and community. Ellen approached every endeavor with wholehearted devotion, whether serving Hudson Opera House, working in local government, or curating Ellen’s List to keep residents informed and connected.
Founding Executive Director Gary Schiro aptly noted that individuals like Ellen are rare, a sentiment widely shared by all who knew her. She was a mentor, collaborator, and dear friend whose vision centered on bringing people together through the arts.
Hudson Hall extends its deepest condolences to Ellen’s family and loved ones, especially her niece and longtime caregiver, Jennifer. Ellen Thurston’s legacy will continue to inspire Hudson for generations to come. Rest in peace.
